Orthodontics is the field of dentistry that corrects crowding and gaps between teeth and mismatches between the upper and lower jaws. The aim is not only appearance; it is also to help the teeth be cleaned more effectively and to spread biting forces evenly.

Two main methods are used in orthodontic treatment:

  • Fixed braces. Teeth are moved with metal or tooth-coloured brackets bonded to the teeth and wires attached to them.
  • Clear aligners. A series of custom-made clear trays, changed at set intervals, moves the teeth step by step. The aligners need to be worn for most of the day.

Who may it suit?

  • People with crowded or spaced teeth
  • People whose upper and lower teeth do not meet correctly (overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite)
  • People whose teeth have shifted again after previous orthodontic treatment
  • People who need tooth positions adjusted before implants or prosthetic work

Orthodontic treatment can be carried out at any age, but the gums must be healthy. In children, the timing of treatment that guides jaw growth is important. Which method is suitable depends on the teeth and the type of problem.

How does the process work?

  1. Examination. The teeth, jaws and facial profile are assessed.
  2. Records. X-rays, photographs and impressions or a digital scan are taken.
  3. Treatment plan. The method, estimated duration and expectations are discussed.
  4. Starting treatment. Brackets are bonded or the first clear aligners are provided.
  5. Regular check-ups. Progress is checked at set intervals during treatment and adjustments are made.
  6. Retention. After treatment, a fixed or removable retainer is used to keep the teeth in their new position.

Frequently asked questions

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

It depends on the type and severity of the problem, the person's age and how well the treatment is followed. An estimated duration is given after the examination and records are reviewed.

Braces or clear aligners?

There are situations where either method is suitable. For some complex movements fixed braces may be more appropriate. With clear aligners, the result depends on wearing them for the recommended time.

How should I look after my mouth during treatment?

Food and plaque build-up around brackets increases the risk of decay. An orthodontic toothbrush, interdental brushes and regular check-ups are especially important during this time.

Will my teeth move back after treatment?

Teeth may tend to move back towards their old positions after treatment. This is why the retainer must be used for the recommended time and in the recommended way.

Whether it is suitable for you is determined by an examination.
