What is it?
During the day a soft layer called bacterial plaque forms on the surface of the teeth. Plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing gradually hardens into tartar (calculus). Tartar cannot be removed with a toothbrush at home.
In a dental cleaning at the clinic, tartar and plaque are removed from the visible surfaces of the teeth and along the gum line with special instruments. The surfaces are then polished. This is a preventive procedure aimed at preventing gum disease.
Who may it suit?
- Anyone with tartar build-up
- People who notice bleeding gums when brushing
- People concerned about bad breath
- People who have been treated for gum disease and need regular follow-up
- People with surface stains from smoking, tea or coffee
How quickly tartar builds up varies from person to person. The interval between cleanings is set at the examination, according to the condition of the gums.
How does the process work?
- Examination. The amount of tartar and the condition of the gums are assessed.
- Ultrasonic cleaning. Vibrating tips and a water spray break up and remove the tartar.
- Hand instruments. Any remaining deposits are cleaned away.
- Polishing. The tooth surfaces are polished, which makes it harder for plaque to stick again.
- Home care advice. Brushing technique and the use of floss and interdental brushes are explained.
The procedure is usually completed in a single visit. If gum disease is found, further treatment is planned.
Frequently asked questions
Does cleaning damage the teeth?
A cleaning carried out with the correct technique does not wear away tooth enamel. For a few days afterwards the teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold.
Why did my gums bleed after the cleaning?
Inflamed gums can bleed during cleaning. Once the tartar has been removed and home care is kept up regularly, the bleeding usually decreases.
How often should I have a cleaning?
For many people once or twice a year is recommended. For people who have had gum disease or whose tartar builds up more quickly, the interval may be shorter.
Does cleaning whiten the teeth?
Cleaning removes surface stains and tartar. It does not change the natural colour of the tooth; that is the subject of teeth whitening.
Whether it is suitable for you is determined by an examination.
