A bridge is a fixed prosthesis that fills the gap left by one or more missing teeth. The teeth on either side of the gap are used as supports; they are prepared like crowns and the artificial tooth in between is attached to them. The bridge is not removed by the patient.

Implants can also support a bridge instead of neighbouring teeth. In that case natural teeth do not need to be reduced.

Who may it suit?

  • People with one or a few missing teeth who have sound teeth on both sides of the gap
  • People whose neighbouring teeth already need large fillings or crowns
  • People who cannot have implants because of their general health or bone

For a bridge, tissue is removed from the supporting teeth and this cannot be reversed. The roots and gums of the supporting teeth must be healthy enough to carry the bridge. Implant, bridge or removable denture options for the missing tooth are considered together at the examination.

How does the process work?

  1. Examination and X-ray. The roots, bone support and gums of the supporting teeth are assessed.
  2. Preparing the supporting teeth. Under local anaesthesia the teeth are reduced so that the bridge can sit on them.
  3. Impression and shade selection.
  4. Temporary bridge. A temporary bridge is fitted until the permanent one is ready.
  5. Try-in. Fit, colour and bite are checked.
  6. Cementing. The bridge is permanently cemented.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean under a bridge?

Normal floss does not pass under the artificial tooth of a bridge. Special floss with a stiff end, interdental brushes or a water flosser can be used. Your dentist will show you a suitable method.

Bridge or implant?

Both options have advantages and limits. A bridge requires the neighbouring teeth to be reduced; an implant requires a surgical procedure and enough bone. The decision is made by assessing the teeth, the bone and general health together.

How long does a bridge last?

The life of a bridge depends on the health of the supporting teeth, oral hygiene and regular check-ups. Decay or gum disease in the supporting teeth can shorten it.

Can a bridge be made without reducing the teeth?

For some missing front teeth, bridges bonded to the back surface of the neighbouring teeth, requiring less reduction, may be used. Suitability depends on the bite and the condition of the teeth.

Whether it is suitable for you is determined by an examination.
