A crown is a restoration that completely covers the visible part of a tooth. It aims to restore the shape, size and strength of the tooth.

Crowns can be made from different materials:

  • All-ceramic and zirconia crowns. Metal-free and made in a tooth colour.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. A metal framework inside with porcelain on the outside.

The material is chosen according to the position of the tooth, the remaining tooth structure, biting forces and aesthetic expectations.

Who may it suit?

  • Teeth that have lost a large part of their structure to decay or fracture and cannot be repaired with a filling
  • Root-filled teeth at risk of fracture
  • Severely worn teeth
  • Teeth that will support a bridge
  • As the restoration on an implant

For a crown, a certain amount of tissue is removed from around the tooth; this cannot be reversed. If a treatment that removes less tissue is suitable, that option is considered first.

How does the process work?

  1. Examination and X-ray. The root of the tooth and the surrounding tissues are assessed; if needed, root canal or gum treatment is done first.
  2. Preparing the tooth. Under local anaesthesia the tooth is reduced so that the crown can sit on it.
  3. Impression. An impression is taken with conventional materials or a digital scanner, and the shade is chosen.
  4. Temporary crown. A temporary crown protects the tooth until the permanent crown is ready.
  5. Try-in. The fit, colour and bite of the crown are checked.
  6. Cementing. The crown is permanently cemented to the tooth.

Frequently asked questions

Can a crowned tooth decay?

Yes. Decay can develop at the edge of the crown, where the tooth and crown meet. Brushing, flossing and regular check-ups are therefore still necessary after a crown is fitted.

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A crown covers all surfaces of the tooth. A veneer usually covers only the front surface and is placed with less tissue removal. Which is suitable depends on the condition of the tooth.

Is zirconia a metal?

No. Zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is a ceramic. It is used in dentistry for crown and bridge frameworks because of its strength.

How long do crowns last?

The life of a crown depends on oral hygiene, clenching and grinding habits, the material used and the position of the tooth. The edges of the crown and the gums are checked at regular check-ups.

Whether it is suitable for you is determined by an examination.
